Chapter Twenty-Five

An hour later, the party split up. Kendo and Catol went to the eastern alley, per the plan, while a hooded Argon and Stebo went to the western alley. As for Fralia, she had to return to the pre-coronation party that all high-ranking officials in the kingdom had to attend. Due to being the archmage of the academy, Fralia had been invited to the festivities and couldn’t be late, not unless she wanted to arouse the suspicion of Tenka, at any rate. They didn’t want Tenka to suspect that Fralia was part of their plan to prevent his coronation, at least not until it was too late for him to do anything about it.

And finally, Surrels made his way through the back streets and alleyways of the capital to the northern alley. In his mind, he visualized everyone as little dots moving along the map, at first going in seemingly opposite directions, only to converge on a single point—the public square—eventually.

But Surrels did find it challenging to move unseen through the streets of the capital, even when he stuck religiously to the back streets and mostly empty alleys where few people lived. The streets of the capital were packed with people from all over the kingdom, many of them also heading to the coronation, expecting to see the coronation of the first new king of Malarsan in many years. Merchants hawked wares in the streets while street performers put on shows for the visitors to the capital, earning themselves a decent amount of money from what Surrels saw.

The excitement in the air was almost tangible. No doubt everyone was expecting to see a grand coronation ceremony as the handsome young Tenka Hojara was crowned king of Malarsan today.

But Surrels felt less excited and more nervous, for reasons that were obvious. He kept looking over his shoulder, paying careful attention to his surroundings to make sure that no one was following him. It was probably irrational to worry that much about the demons, given how the Dead Dragons had successfully gotten him, Kendo, and Stebo past human security without issue, but he worried nonetheless.

Demons are tricky bastards, Surrels thought, pausing in the shadows of an alleyway to allow a large family to walk the street before him on their way to the coronation before he quickly crossed the street himself into an alley on the opposite side. They always strike you when you least expect it.

But Surrels did not run into any demons, guards, or any other obstacles on his way to the coronation. The most tense moment was when he accidentally stumbled over a homeless old man lying on one of the back streets, but the old man didn’t even wake up. And if he had, Surrels doubted he would have been sober enough to recognize Surrels, given the number of empty alcohol bottles spread around the homeless man like flowers in a field.

Soon, Surrels reached the northern alley, just as planned. Hiding behind a couple of trash cans,
